Neuro-oncology
The treatment of brain tumors is a special area of personal interest.
Since 2011, I have been a regular participant in local neuro-oncology councils, and since 2013, I have been a member of the Neuro-Oncology Working Group of the German Oncology Society (NOA). Under my supervision, one of the first transcranial magnetic stimulation machines in Europe was used in the Bielefeld neurosurgery clinic to map the functional areas of the brain in patients with gliomas. In 2015, I introduced the Transcranial Tumor Treating Fields (TTFs) method for the treatment of malignant gliomas at the Schlosspark Hospital, and in 2016, I was certified (both at a clinical and personal level) for the application of this method. From 2015 to 2021, I was the scientific director of the neuro-oncology council of the Park-Kliniken Berlin group of hospitals.
I hold the diploma "Specialized Neurosurgical Oncology" from the German Academy of Neurosurgery .
Spinal Surgery
The large number of patients with spinal diseases both in the Bielefeld Neurosurgery Clinic, but mainly in the Schlosspark Hospital Neurosurgery Clinic, necessitated my clinical involvement in the surgical treatment of traumatic and degenerative diseases of the spine. During the period 2011-2021, I performed hundreds of complex spinal surgeries (anterior and posterior spinal fusions of the entire spine including diseases of the occipitocervical junction and the A1-A2 complex, interoral dental surgeries, sagittal balance restoration surgeries, oncological diseases) many of which I performed with minimally invasive methods.
As a culmination of my involvement with the spine, I obtained the Master's Diploma of the German Spine Society (Deutsche Wirbelsäulengesellschaft - DWG) in 2019.
Skull Base Surgery
Skull base surgery is a distinct area of personal interest.
Since 2007, I have been attending clinical and practical workshops (Hands-on Workshops and Courses) on skull base surgery in Greece and abroad. In 2009, I participated in the creation of the surgical anatomy laboratory of the neurosurgery clinic of the “Evangelismos” hospital and the Hellenic Center for Neurosurgical Research, and in 2010 as co-organizer and instructor of the 1st Clinical Workshop on Anatomy of Neurosurgical Approaches. Since then, I have participated as an instructor and guest speaker in numerous Greek and international applied skull base surgical courses (Anatomy of neurosurgical skull-base approaches, University of Athens, Athens, Greece from 2010 to 2019, Cologne international skull-base course, University of Cologne, Cologne, Germany from 2016 to 2019, 1st Erlangen Interdisciplinary Course for microscopic and endoscopic surgery of the anterior and lateral skull base, University of Erlangen, Erlangen, Germany, 2019).
In 2011, I took over the Department of Neuro-Oncology and Skull Base Surgery at the Neurosurgical Clinic in Bielefeld. Since 2017, I have also been involved in the application of endoscopic techniques in skull base surgery.
My Goal
My goal is to provide high-quality medical and neurosurgical services.
I know that many brain and spinal cord conditions touch the core of our being and fill us with fear. For this reason, I believe that experience, knowledge, and the use of advanced technology are just as important as empathy and understanding.
I am confident that my many years of experience in large neurosurgical centers in Germany will be useful for the Greek patient, to whom I aspire to offer services comparable to those of the best centers abroad.
I believe that the collaboration of various specialties (neurologists, oncologists, radiation therapists, physiotherapists, etc.) through well-organized structures is essential for the comprehensive treatment of the neurosurgical patient, who should never feel alone.
The 2nd University Clinic of the University of Athens at the "Attiko" General Hospital where I work (Clinic Director: Professor E.I. Boviatsis) is one of the most modern neurosurgical clinics in Greece, capable of covering the entire spectrum of modern hand surgery in terms of medical and technological equipment ( attikoneurosurgery.com ).
